Humanities Department

To understand and know history is to understand and know the events, cultural milieu, and current political environments that are our modern world. The Humanities Department offers a diverse series of courses that combine academic rigor, research, and writing skills. The classes also inspire students to develop a lifelong love of reading and critical thinking.

Integrated into the curriculum is an understanding of the role of the Jewish people as they react to the dominant culture of their surroundings throughout time and place. The courses demonstrate how race, ethnicity, gender, and religion play a role in the creation of our contemporary world. The curriculum stresses current events in each course and uses research in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, art history, and economics to enhance the overall learning experience.

As well, the faculty equips students with the tools crucial for clear and effective written expression. Students are introduced to a variety of literary genres, and demonstrate understanding by writing creative, personal, and analytical essays. Special attention is given to correct English grammar as it applies to lively and lucid writing. Speaking and listening skills are developed through student presentations.
