Science Department
The Science Department supports the mission and philosophy of the School by providing a diverse and challenging program with the goal of creating science literate citizens. By gaining an understanding of the nature of science and our place in the universe, students will develop a cherished sense of responsibility for and protection of the Earth. The exciting program is founded on the Judaic values of Tikkun Olam (mending the world) and Bal Tashchit (not wantonly misusing natural resources) within a scientific and technological perspective.
In the Middle School the program is an integrated program that is heavily grounded in the process of inquiry. In the Upper School the program is divided along the more classical approach to science with Concepts of Physics and Chemistry as the flagship, Grade 9 program that bridges the gap between a more qualitative approach to a more quantitative approach to topics.
The Health and Human Development program was developed by health educators and is overseen by the Director of Student Services. It is based on the value of Betzelem Elohim (made in God's image) and has two goals:
-
That students will become aware of the ways they can pursue wellness in their lives
-
That students will develop the skills to be able to do so
Throughout the course, the ongoing question will be from a general and Jewish perspective, what does it mean to be a healthy person?
