When the Body Worlds Exhibition (a traveling exhibit that shows entire bodies, individual organs and transparent body slices that have been preserved through the process of Plastination) was at the California Science Center, Jewish Studies and Biology teachers worked together to develop lively discussions about the pros and cons of the exhibit and the dangers of objectification to allow upper school students to make an informed decision about attending.
Based on Jewish legal and philosophical sources, Jewish studies teachers engaged students in dialogue about the moral and spiritual conflicts inherent in the exhibit. Biology teachers discussed the educational value of being able to understand their own physiology and gain a new appreciation for what it means to be human. When students arrived at the exhibit, they began and ended their viewing with a prayer for the appreciation of the body. As a result of the framing, students approached each display with a greater sense awe and amazement and a deep respect rather than depersonalization or entertainment.
