The Memory Project
One of the goals in the AP Studio Art portfolio each year is to create a self portrait, but this past year the Department wanted a project that would have a bigger impact on the student. Students participated in the "Memory Project" which sends photographs of children living in orphanages in impoverished countries to advanced art programs such as the one at Milken.
Each student interpreted their photograph, creating an expressive, realistic drawing by using warm and vivid colors to duplicate the childrens' skin tones. As their drawing progressed through many hours of work, students became more involved with the project by visually bonding with their child. They felt like they were actually giving something of themselves through their art. Most importantly, they learned how to donate and give away a piece of art to which they had become so attached. These children have few possessions to call their own so these portraits will help them preserve their childhood and bolster their spirits. Personal letters and art supplies accompanied these portaits sent to the children in Guatemala.
