Hebrew Department

The Hebrew Department is driven by the belief that mastery of Hebrew will promote students' understanding of their history, culture and tradition, excite them about lifelong Jewish learning, foster a sense of belonging to the Jewish people, and cultivate strong ties with Medinat Yisrael (the State of Israel) and Am Yisrael (the Jewish people).

The goals of the Middle and Upper School Hebrew Department are in accordance to Milken Community High School standards. Our Department seeks to graduate students who are clear and effective communicators; creative and practical problem solvers; critical thinkers who are able to use resources and information to form new ideas; integrated and informed thinkers who use both religious and secular materials; and young adults who are self-directed and life long learners.

The Hebrew Department seeks to create a community of Hebrew speakers who reach a gradual tangible progress in fluency and precision in the Hebrew language; to be able to read clearly, listen to and interpret messages in Hebrew from multiple sources such as poetry, songs, articles, stories, midrashim, agadot, excerpts from the Bible and lectures; to use the four language acquisition skills: reading, writing listening and speaking when learning elected subject matters such as Jewish and Israeli history, philosophy, art, media and literature; to analyze, synthesize and evaluate multiple Hebrew sources to create and form new ideas, solutions and theories; and to develop a close and ongoing relationship with the Hebrew language and the land of Israel.

At each level, the goal of teaching is to develop the student’s active linguistic ability, based on knowledge and proficiency in five dimensions: language skills, subject area content, thought processes, communicative activities, and linguistic grammatical topics.
