Make a gift to Milken

Testimonial from a Hebrew Department Student

1. Why is it important to learn Hebrew at Milken?

I think learning Hebrew at Milken is extremely important. In fact, I think it is one of the most significant parts of attending Milken Community High School. Hebrew is different and unique. Whenever I am in Hebrew class, I cannot control myself from thinking about Israel. I always think about how amazing it is that in Israel, everybody speaks Hebrew. Although Hebrew was not my first or second language, I feel a deeper connection than I do with any other language. Though we live in the United States, we are constantly educating ourselves about Israel and trying to help out. I think we owe it to our homeland to master the language and be able to use it when we visit there. Furthermore, I visit Israel and it is always nice to practice my Hebrew there. I have several different Israeli relatives and I always have a good time showing off my Hebrew. I truly think that we can only benefit from learning Hebrew at Milken.

2. What do I want to accomplish/ what are my goals in Hebrew this year?

This year in Hebrew, I want to accomplish a lot. It is exciting that I am in my senior year and in such a high level of Hebrew. I want to learn more vocabulary and learn more sophisticated language. Though I have learned grammar in the previous years, I want to review it, so I can feel confident with it. Throughout the years, I have always been better at speaking Hebrew, as opposed to writing in it. I want to improve on my writing, but still maintain the way I speak. Furthermore, I want to be able to read longer stories in Hebrew, with harder vocabulary than usual. I want to continue to use what I have learned in school, for when I visit Israel. I am going on March of the Living, and I hope that I will be completely comfortable with speaking Hebrew!
